Clean the registry after uninstalling driver and software. Reboot and Windows will find the soundcard and install a generic driver. The card will now show up as a High Defiition Audio Device.
i buy a x-fi to have a High Definition Device? kidding or?
Yes, its grim :(
Hopefully we will have a solution from Creative soon and not have to experiment?with workarounds.
Re: Sound dissapearsZHopefully this helps some of you guys... I faced the same issue when I upgraded my Dell XPS 700 to Windows 7 64 bit, then again after installing SP. In both cases, a version of Daniel K's driver set fixed the issue. I couldn't find a place to download them after my SP upgrade this week, but thankfully was able to find a copy on one of my archi've disks and it still works, even though all the other methods I tried failed.
I uploaded this to my blog for you guys, as long as bandwidth doesn't go too high, I should be able to keep hosting.

?
Thanks for the tip! I fixed the download link now.
The link you posted I tried when working on my sound issue this week, but didn't fix it for me for some reason. hopefully the version I posted works for someone as well :)
Have been using the Creative driver from Windows Update since rebuild on 5/06. Three days after the install the sound was gone, but the speaker icon was still there showing that the X-fi had not defaulted to SPDIF. To get the sound back I used the 'RESTORE DEFAULTS' option. The sound re-appeared instantly. So I have not used any of the tweaks and kept the device software on defaults and its been OK now for nearly three weeks.

its hard to reproduce. you have win7 running, everything is fine, you shut down or make a restart and right after boot screen the sound is gone.
the problem is that it happens not everytime. it works for or 2 weeks, then it happens again.
reinstalling the driver fixes the problem for the next few restarts.
