Soundblaster E5 is having bad data connection when using USB 2.0 on ThinkPad W510

    Hi all,
I've been using my E5 for almost 8 months now ... but I have a new issue now
    I'm using the firmware 151105 before the latest one ( 160905 )

The issue I'm having is when I connect my E5 to my laptop (ThinkPad W510 ) using supplied USB cable on USB 2.0 port, the E5 is giving a weird sound .. more like a garbled sound, robot-like sound with a delay
I thought it was caused by a dirty USB port, so I cleaned the USB 2.0 port on my laptop

Restarted the laptop after cleaning the port and plugged the cable again, still that weird sound come out from my E5 ...

Then I changed the connection to USB 3.0 on my laptop and voila ... the E5 works perfectly ..

Do I have to upgrade my firmware to solve this USB 2.0 issue on my laptop?

    Thank you for your answer.

    Hi aoitenshi,

You can try to update the firmware of the Sound Blaster E5, the issue may be caused by the driver of the USB 2.0 Host Controller.

You can try to update the driver of the USB 2.0 Host Controller.

    Okay,
So I have updated the firmware on my E5 to the latest version :

And I have updated the USB 2.0 host controller on my laptop

The problem remain the same, the sound coming from the yellow USB port has terrible sound, while the sound coming from the blue USB port (USB3.0 ) has no issue at all.

So I guess I am stuck using USB3.0 connection for my E5 T.T

    Hi aoitenshi,

There are some users who feedback that they can only get their Sound Blaster USB audio devices to work on USB 2.0 ports instead of USB 3.0 ports. The issue may be due to incompatibility between the USB Host controller and the Sound Blaster USB audio devices.

Some of the users updated the drivers of their USB Host controllers and it solved the problem but some were not able to solve the problem.

I have checked the specifications of your laptop and it seems that there is another USB 2.0 port which is the USB 2.0/eSATA port. It is the port on the right of the two USB 3.0 ports. This is the wikipedia article about the eSATAp port.

The USB 2.0 port you have used may be a PoweredUSB port and it is a little different from a generic USB 2.0 port. I got the specifications on the USB ports of the Lenovo Thinkpad W510 from this website.

    Hi HT-CL,

    Sorry for my late response.
I have a docking station for my W510 laptop and all 6 USB ports encounter the same issue.

    Oh well,
I can live with usb 3.0 for my E5

    Thanks for your help.
