Best sound blaster card to use with spectrum analysis / FFT software

I tried using a Sound Blaster Z PCIe card in conjunction with spectrum analysis software but the results were dissapointing.
The SB Z appears to add a fair amount of distortion (mainly second harmonic) to signals feeding the line input.

I then tried an old SB Audigy 2 PCI card in another PC. The results were much better.
Does anyone know why this should be?

My own theory is that the SB Z shares a single input jack for line input and mic input.
That must mean there is some variable gain amplification and/or signal switching before the signal reaches the ADC. Is this responsible for the added distortion?

Can anyone recommend the best sound card to use to get the lowest distortion possible on input signals to use with FFT analysis?

Probably a X-Fi Titanium HD, its mic and line-in seems to be really good (but I never recorded anything)
