Ah - Thanks.
I was hoping it was something I could set at a more global level to fix it in all apps and games.

This is exactly the problem I'm having as well.
Only one question needs answering: Hardware or drivers?
If it's hardware, I'll need to RMA the set (not easy). If it's software, Creative will have to provide us with a decent driver fix.

The concerns you people are having with the headset are caused by the headset driver not having complete functionality with Direct Sound (part of the DirectX library). If you can, switch your application over to another capture method (this can be done in most voip apps).
I strongly urge creative to add full DirectX support to their drivers, or to release the source code and have their community do it for them.

Sigfig, I don't think that is the entire picture. Even when choosing a "wave" input method, instead of DirectSound (link in Ventrilo or Teamspeak), the hissing background polution is exactly the same.

I have not tested the method in TeamSpeak or Ventrillo. I simply tested the sound in microsoft's default recording app (which I know for sure uses OpenAL) and compared to results from Valve software's Steam gaming platform (which I know for sure uses Direct Sound).
I have no idea of the input method of the "wave" setting, and therefor cannot make any conclusions based on it.

I tested this. I also get the same distortion background noise when using the windows sound recorder.
So, still no go... any word from Creative would be greatly appreciated.

Second email to the support team. So far, not much success.
Is there anyone who send back the headset, got a new one and didn't have this problem anymore?

I just received a new headset from the vendor to replace my first one.
The first one was diagnosed as faulty by the Creative support team after they received it in their hands.
The new headset has EXACTLY the same issues. Again, for the sake of it, I have tested it on different computers, different USB ports, with different OS (XP-Vista-Win7) in different buildings (home, work, neighbour).
After waiting for two months to get diagnosed and receive a new headset, this result is underwhelming to say the least.
This is just a really bad product. I am returning it and requesting my money back.
