I get huge latency (1/2 second) when playing VST instruments live in Nuendo 3.  With already recorded midi parts there is no latency on VST instruments.  Playing soundfonts live through the soundcard's synth there is also no latency.

I'm pretty sure the problem is in Nuendo somewhere because I can load the VST instruments by themselves in XP without Nuendo running and can play with virtually no latency.  I tried to increase VST delay compensation (for playing live) in Nuendo preferences but that didn't do anything.

Any help would be appreciated.

My system:

Intel I7 2.66 gHz

4gb ram

x-fi elite pro

xp 32 bit

Axiom 49 controller

Update: by reducing the ASIO buffer size in Nuendo I got the latency down to about 14ms (still to much for my liking though).  If I reduce the buffer size beyond 600 I get cracking audio so that's as low as I can really go.  WIll different ASIO drivers give me better results?  If so, can anyone recomend some?

On most Steinberg products, this is the cure (sorry, but, I don't know if Nuendo uses same names on menus/buttons):

Devices->Device Setup->VST Audiobay or VST Multitrack->Expert settings->"Lower Latency" maybe needs to be disabled.
