Good to hear you got it solved.

USB audio interfaces are quite sensitive for resource hogging processes as like port scanning drivers (dongle, wi-fi (wireless network), etc.). I wonder what was the reason in this case if the DVD drive caused you problems ... could it be

- some IRQ/resource sharing issue  (you could check this by running system information tool (look under Hardware resources)) or

- auto-run feature taking too high priority (did you try by disabling auto-run feature)?

It's possible to disable devices you don't necessarily need. This is done either through BIOS options or through system device manager. Both ways works so it's up to you ... . In any case, if you don't necessarily need the wireless network device then turn it OFF.

I did have some issues with my 0404 USB as well ... in My case, it was sentinel dongle drivers and HP printer drivers/utilities (HP software package were fully installed) causing skipping and distortion, etc. issues.

IIRC, I fixed this by switching all drivers related to these to start manually rather than automatically (system services control panel (Start Run... services.msc  (on XP)) or just disabled those.

Instructions over how to disable AutoRun

or

- Start --> Run... Gpedit.msc  --> go to computer configuration , administrative templates , system and find the line "turn off autoplay

On Windows XP, SI tool can be started from Start menu - All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System Information
