im new to win7 x64 having upgraded a few days ago. my gfx card died so i decided to bite the bullet and take the opportunity to upgrade to win7 x64 so i could take advantage of the added ram.
the sound card never had problems on winxp. despite having set it to 4 speaker surround sound configuration through the creative dialogue and windows 7 dialogue i only get the front two speakers working when playing media files (itunes wmp etc.) however in games i get full surround sound (css and bf2142). also the sound sometimes goes from being fine and normal to having a high pitched 'tin-can' sound. this passes after a few minutes (usually). its as if someone has turned the bitrate way down and the music is very lossy.
my main job is design and computer modelling. using software such as rhinocerous and maxwell render and as such i really dont want to have to remove the extra 4 gig ram i put in (running 7gig ram). i had seen this posted as a solution to x-fi problems.
can anyone help me because im at my wits end, ive tried numerous drivers and beta driver versions, updated what i need to update. i will do whatever is recommended but i really really want my 7gig ram for my ram intensive applications

solution works for the surround sound but DOES NOT CURE THE TIN-CAN NOISE
Dear David,
Thank you for writing in to Creative Support Services; I appreciate the
opportunity to assist you.
From what I understood, only your front speakers of your 4.1 sound
system are working properly.
Kindly follow the link given below to download and install the driver
for your soundcard if you have not done so:

I have a x-fi XtreamGamer and do the same.....
"the sound sometimes goes from being fine and normal to having a high pitched 'tin-can' sound. this passes after a few minutes (usually)."
Is it the same problem?
