windows 7 - SB Audigy SE OEM - sound stopped working

Hi there,

I recently built a dual boot machine - Windows 7 and ubuntu 9.10. I installed Windows first, then Ubuntu. Both boot no problem. I have a SB Audigy SE OEM PCI card which was unrecognised by Windows, so did a Windows Update which found and installed a driver and sound worked no problem. I then booted Ubuntu and did some config and installs (incl. wine and spotify) and now when I boot into Windows, there is no sound. WIndows and Ubuntu are on separate physical disks so there can't be any conflict/overwite issue. The Device Manager in Windows says everything is fine - there is nothing wrong with the sound card and the driver is fine, just no sound. Sound works fine in Ubuntu.

I don't know if the dual boot scenario has anything to do with this or if it is something to do with Windows / SB driver on its own, but I've gone from a working system with sound to having no sound in Windows.

Any ideas?

H0ff.

I wish I could help, but I'm getting the same problem. So at least you're not the only one.

I have a Sound Blaster Live! card (not sure which one it is, but Windows Update says SB Audigy or SB Live!). I dual boot between Ubuntu and Windows 7 (with XP as well) and sound was working fine until I upgraded my distro to 9.10 and rebooted into Windows. I did the same thing you did and installed the update that Microsoft issued over Windows Update on October 31st. Now I don't have working sound anymore on Windows 7 and I've checked every possibility and nothing is bringing the sound back. Strangely, sound works in Ubuntu. But it doesn't in XP or 7, and I actually haven't booted into XP for several months. So when I booted back into XP today, the sound wasn't working there either! Very strange.

This issue needs to be brought up. I've been looking for a solution, but I haven't found one.

Omg, same problem here, i use audigy se, and i have installed ubuntu 9.10 (wubi install). i googled and i found your posts. i quickly removed it ... and still nothing, and then i thought it could not be related to any software compatibility, cause they are 2 separate os. so ... i thought ubuntu might have locked the card somehow (i dont know about you but i have an extremely loud sound on ubuntu). i solved the problem by shutting down my computer (not restarting) and shutting down the psu also for about 10 seconds. that solved it ... i`ll install ubuntu again and see if i can fool them both with the shut down thing. hope this helps.

I'm starting to wonder if it might be PulseAudio that's causing the problem? I'm not sure how much activity it can do with a card internally, but maybe when you configure PulseAudio to run a server it's interfering with something on Windows (since there is no OSS/ALSA in Windows OS I guess) because it isn't there.

If any of you are techswavy with Linux, maybe you could find a way to remove PulseAudio completely (or go back to when PulseAudio wasn't being installed by Ubuntu as the default 'standard'). I'm pretty sure since a Linux operating system is the only thing that works with the card and surprsingly not any of the Windows operating systems I use (one I haven't used for months, back when the sound was working), it's a problem with what Linux configured with the card itself.

How to prove this theory or how to fix it is beyond me. Any ideas?

Hi,

As you say, I can only assume that something is happening at the OSS/ALSA level with the card which somehow affects the way the Windows 7 driver communicates with the device. I also found this unfortunately:

Sound Blaster Audigy SE OEM

I didn't even consider this as I tested Windows 7 Ultimate eval for a few weeks on the same hardware without any problems. I only got issues when I dual booted. I've decided to get another sound card - one that is compatible with Windows 7:

Sound Blaster X-Fi Extreme PCI-e

Thanks a lot Microsoft! :mansad:

On the pulseaudio front, I've checked and it is version 0.9.19 under my Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit. You could remove it with "sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio" but I don't know what effect this will have and I don't want to break my Ubuntu installation just because of crappy Windows!

Hope this helps.

Try that.  Windows update drivers are trash.  They are not fully functional drivers.

Totally the same thing

Tried everything. I have my OpenSuse 11.2 and sound card works perfect. I have my Windows 7 Ultimate, and it shows like everything is working, but there is no sound.

Don't blame pulseaudio. OpenSuse does not have one, and I have the same issue. It's purely drivers issue. I have also built-it sound card and it works in both systems without issues.

Creative did not bother to build Windows 7 drivers for low-end cards. I do not consider myself their customer anymore. They will not get a penny from me.
