800 GTX and X-FI Extreme driver issue

I wasn't sure where to post this, but Yesterday I bought Windows Vista Ultimate and did a full x64 clean install.
After installation was complete, I went and downloaded 100.59 drivers x64 for my EVGA Nvidia 8800 GTX. Set my screen to 1900x1600 native resolution on a 24'' LCD from Dell. Restarted, worked fine!
Next step was to install drivers x64 for my Creative X-Fi Extreme Music sound card. Right after installation it asked me to restart the computer. After restart my resolution changed to 800x600. Under resolution settings i no longer had 1900x1600 as an option, only default sizes up to 12xx by 7xx. Under advanced properties the system was not recognizing my video card.
Tried running 100.59 setup file again and it errors out saying drivers are not compatible with my system.
Removed the driver for X-Fi, restart, all is working again....

TEST #2
After windows Re-install (again from scratch), downloaded X-Fi drivers first - installation went smoothly.
2nd step was to install Nvidia drivers and setup again errors out on my telling me that the drivers are incompatible with my system.

TEST #3, same as 1 but I tried x32 bit vista.
TEST #4, same as 2 but I tried x32 bit vista.

Not sure whom to address this to either nvidia or creative, but will try to do both and hopefully there will be a resolution to this.

System Info:
AMD x64 Dual Core Processor, 2.4GHz
RAM 3Gb
EVGA Nvidia 8800 GTX
Dell 24'' LCD
Creative X-Fi Extreme Music
Windows Vista Ultimate, Full (bought it 2 days ago)

Hi, this I know has happened to me and to others, at first the system allows you to
use all resolutions but after a reboot you find that the resolutions have topped out at
a much lower resolution than those that were at first available to you. This may be
due to the resolution 1900x1600 being a custom not a native one or it may also be
related to the refresh rate of your monitor.

Go into Control Panel / Display / Change Resolution Attributes

On the right hand side is a panel that will give you the refresh rates available
with your monitor. The most common is 60 Hz the sliders on the left show the
resolutions available under this refresh rate. The refesh rate being used should
be shown with a blue bar running through it.

You may have more than one refresh rate option open to you, if this is the case
choose the largest figure, probably 75 Hz. Click this with the mouse and other
available resolutions should appear including the 1900 x 1600 one. If this is not
the case you may still be able to drive your monitor to this resolution using a utility
called powerstrip.

Re: 800 GTX and X-FI Extreme driver issue

If his resolution comes up at 800x600, that shows that the driver that is currently being utilized is the Generic VGA driver, in which case the maximum resolution is 1280x1024. It doesn't sound like a refresh rate issue, it sounds clearly like a driver issue.

One possibility: Both video card and sound card may have an IRQ conflict. Check into that.

Try using old drivers for either sound or video card, and see if that helps. Trying using the XP Pro 64-bit drivers for your sound card, instead of Vista 64-bit.

Re: 800 GTX and X-FI Extreme driver issue

Hi John, you may have knocked the nail on the head there is the 100.59 a WQHL
signed driver, you will know what I am referring to. X64 won't install non-WQHL
unsigned drivers so I would guess this may be related what do you think?

Re: 800 GTX and X-FI Extreme driver issue

This issue puts the point across that Nvidia drivers are still borked up like Creative drivers. So its not a one trick pony :smileyvery-happy:

Re: 800 GTX and X-FI Extreme driver issue

I would tend to believe that it is an IRQ conflict and the nVidia driver is not loading after installation of the Creative driver.  I have a 8800GTS on 16 and my Audigy 2zs is on 26, so no conflict and both drivers work in harmony.  No suttering sound, etc. which happens on some mobos.  I'm running my GTS with a Dell 3007 at 2560 x 1600.

Re: 800 GTX and X-FI Extreme driver issue

Hey guys, thank you for you replies. I think it is an ICQ conflict, becasue after installing X-Fi driver, under device managed i have an exclamation point next to one of the PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge. Do you guys know how to find a quick workaround insted of waiting for a driver upgrade?

I'll try Xp x64 drivers but i doubt it will work becasue XP CD came out WAY be4 8800 GTX so it may not have the drivers i need, but i'll give it a shot!

Re: 800 GTX and X-FI Extreme driver issue

IRQ conflicts are non existent in Vista (as well as XP). You can share lots of devices on a single IRQ (my X-FI is also shared with video card without issue). You try the X-Fi in a different PCI slot?

Re: 800 GTX and X-FI Extreme driver issue

I have not tried that (it worked fine with XP) the only thing changes was the OS and drivers.

I'll try a different PCI slot, will let you know.
